About the Contest

In today’s world where technology is becoming increasingly prominent and essential to nearly every field of study, we aim to instill a love for STEM to girls from K-12. We hope to show them how innovative and creative they can be and encourage them to develop ideas that are powerful, disruptive, and cutting-edge.

Now that you have checked out the online learning resources, it is time to go out and identify a problem, brainstorm the unique and innovative problem-solving idea, make a program in PictoBlox and submit it.

Unknown16 is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). It is focused on encouraging young girls to undertake projects that work to solve social issues by applying the knowledge learned from STEM. This is particularly targeted towards young girls under the age of 16 to ensure that a passion for STEM is brewing from a young age and from a minority gender standpoint.

What is the timeline of the contest?
  • Launch of the contest: 1st August 2019
  • Registration: 10th August 2019
  • Entry submission: 15th August 2019
  • Results: 31st August 2019
What are the things you will need to submit for the competition?

Concept Note

You will be required to submit a concept note made by the individual/group on the competition portal. This is a document and/or video submission that should talk about the following:

  • What is the problem that this project is attempting to solve or spread awareness about? (150-200 words)
  • Why was this cause chosen? (100-150 words)
  • Challenges faced. (100-150 words)
  • Any new knowledge gained? (100-150 words) 

PictoBlox Project

You will be required to make the program using the PictoBlox programming software and then upload the project file on the competition portal.

Photos of kids and projects need to be uploaded on the competition portal.

What is the evaluation criteria?
  • Relevance and Purpose: The project created should be aimed towards solving or spreading knowledge about any of the above-mentioned causes.
  • Design: Should convey completeness and aesthetics that appeal to the user.
  • Originality: a unique and novel idea of the project.
  • Application of concepts: number of different concepts applied and their relevance to the project idea. Standard concepts include Variables, Looping, Conditional execution, Input, and Output.
  • Adherence to the Contest guidelines.
How to prepare?
  • Register on the contest portal. 
  • Complete the basic learning topics on PictoBlox to understand its interface and learn to program. 
  • Pick a cause from the unknown16.com website that you are passionate about.

  • Brainstorm how you want to tackle the problem with your groups.

  • Equally divide responsibly so the project turns out from the best of each student's ability and skill set.
