Skill education plays a crucial role in giving students the knowledge and competencies to thrive in the modern world. It prepares students for dynamic career opportunities and instills in them confidence to take up difficult challenges.

NEP 2020 and NCF-SE emphasizes the role of skill education as a critical component in the curriculum from grade VI onwards. A standout feature of a composite skill lab is its multidisciplinary nature blending hands-on practice with immersive digital experiences. The establishment of composite labs aims to close the gap between theoretical and practical learning.

Read the blog to find out more about the purpose of a composite skill lab, how you can set up and benefit from one in your school premises.

What is a Composite Skill Lab?

what is a composite skill lab

A composite skill lab is an interactive learning space in schools where students will gain practical and hands-on learning experience in a variety of skills. CBSE has issued a mandate to set up a Composite Skill Lab in all CBSE-affiliated schools, particularly in emerging fields like STEM, robotics, IoT, coding, AI, and 3D printing

It is now mandatory for all CBSE-affiliated schools to set up a composite skill lab within three years from the circular date of 23rd August, 2024. Schools seeking affiliation with CBSE must have a composite skill lab as a prerequisite on their premises.

The initiative is in alignment with the goals of NEP 2020 and NCF-SE. This is done to ensure that students undergo application-based learning and cultivate a healthy exposure to the work industry.

The focus areas for a composite skill lab include:

  • Future Tech – Robotics, coding, 3D printing, electronics, electrical work
  • Arts, Design, and Media – Labs may include graphic design, music production, etc
  • Woodworking and Automobile: Carpentry and other practical needs
  • Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy – Develop business ideas, build prototypes, and digital banking exercises.

Implementation Criteria to Setup a Composite Skill Lab

Lab design and space of composite skill lab

Lab size: Schools can build one lab of 600 sq. ft. for classes 6-12  or two separate labs of 400 sq. ft. each for classes 6-10 and 11-12 separately.

Teacher training: Comprehensive training for teachers to facilitate the transition into teaching technical skills and interdisciplinary teaching methods.

Space Design: Designing a versatile space that can be adapted to perform activities from science experiments to art projects. Incorporate movable furniture to allow flexibility.

Space Distribution: Assign distinct zones to specific tasks like wet areas for experiments, dry areas for electronics, and creative corners for design and arts.

Maintenance: Regularly updating the tools and equipment. Establishing a maintenance plan to keep the amenities in good condition.

Requirements for Composite Skill Lab in Schools

The basic requirements for the lab can be determined based on its intended purpose. Some of these are as follows:

Infrastructure: Ensuring there are enough power outlets, stable internet connection, reliable water supply, and proper ventilation.

Tools and Equipment: Opting for versatile and durable tools that can support various activities such as Robotics Kits, 3D printers, computers with necessary pre-installed software, and microscopes.

Smart Classroom Features:  Interactive smart board, Projector and screen

Optimal storage: Lockable cabinets, well-mounted shelves, storage bins

Safety Equipment: Including critical safety features like fire extinguishers, first aid kits, protective gear, and posters with safety instructions throughout the lab.

Purpose of a Composite Skill Lab in Schools

Purpose of Composite Skill Lab

Composite skill labs provide students with opportunities to work on real-world tasks and projects; these labs help translate abstract concepts into tangible skills. Consequently, students  not only understand the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of their learning but also the ‘how.’

Additionally, Composite Skill Labs align seamlessly with modern educational standards, creating dynamic environments that adapt to students’ evolving needs. They not only enhance subject understanding but also equip students with the tools needed to thrive in future careers.

A composite skill lab serves the purpose of

  • Preparing students for various trades and vocations
  • Fostering entrepreneurial skills and nudging them to explore career options beyond traditional ones
  • Aligning students with industry needs and engaging them with real-world tasks

Financial Implications to Setup Up a Composite Skill Lab

As per the existing norms of the board, no additional budget is required. The Director of Skill Education, Dr. Biswajit Saha, suggested involving retired ITI instructors, if necessary, for tasks such as curriculum development, training, assessment, or serving as resource persons. CBSE has approved this proposal and requested a comprehensive database of these instructors, which the DGT has agreed to provide.

Schools are encouraged to explore funding through CSR initiatives, government programs, or public-private partnerships. In the case of government schools, CBSE has established these labs using resources and funding from World Bank projects.
