Can technology improve the quality of education?

Education or no education; humans strive to move forward in every field of life. And technology plays a huge role in this everlasting race to get better. Today, we are going to talk about technology and its applications; how it can have more than just a positive impact on our education system. The curriculum that is followed in schools nowadays is growing to be robust and intense by the minute. In schools, teachers are the source of support for the students and for the curriculum. As teachers, it is very important for us to stay updated with the latest technology.

Jeremy Williams from Vyudu Inc. says that Edwin Hutchins’ theory of distributed cognition (dCoG) tells us how people, their environment and tools can be perceived to be a single cognitive system. He states that educators can observe human learning through the lens of dCoG to create digitally enhanced learning experiences that maximize the interaction and communication of people, their environment and tools (e.g. hands-on activities, simulators, games).

Technology conceives several opportunities for teachers to cater to students with experiences of innovative learning. One of the greatest benefits is that most of these learning experiences are available at any given time and place, which provides students with much more personalized opportunities for interacting with their peers and the subject. With the wide window of choices that are now available, sometimes deciding on a specific digital tool or a type of tool can present a challenge.

Is technology enough?

Technology is one of the pillars of STEM education and it sure acts like one when implied in classrooms. Technology has many aspects that can be applied in education and one of these aspects is responsible for blended learning. Blended learning is an education program. It converts educational content into online digital media, which makes information accessible anywhere and anytime. It requires the physical presence of both teacher and student, with some elements of student control over time, place, path, or pace.

It’s the same as personalized learning. Personalizing the learning experience goes a long way. The biggest advantage of technology in education is that it can be fit into the core requirements of the student. When learning through technology is personalized, the pace of introducing new information; the modality — visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic; the number of repetitions, can all be adjusted accordingly. Even the level of abstraction could be adjusted according to the results that the student shows.  

John McDonald from ClearObject.com says that it is vital that technology is deployed to complement the learning taking place in the classroom, both in regards to textbooks and personal development. He states that this2 generation has more of an intuitive relationship with technology than any previous generation. Leverage that while ensuring that the development of interpersonal skills does not suffer as a result of excessive screen time.

Technology around the World
One other thing that can make learning with technology even more interesting is by holding webinars. We’ve seen that online videos to watch and learn from have also proven to be effective, but, webinars give students the opportunity to learn and question at the same time.

During webinars, students get to interact with educators and mentors and solve problems related to their subjects. This particular quality of webinars also increases the accessibility of education.

Times of India reporter, Anam Ajmal, in a conversation with Nick Cain, project manager at Google, says that the key role that technology has to play in education is to scale access to some of the core tools that can create meaningful impact in the lives of both educators and students. Some key themes can be identified to develop global strategies to support innovations that match the specific needs of a developing society. Some of the important themes are to ensure that students have ready access to the right learning material, especially in their own languages because it ensures a better understanding of subjects. Technology is a building block for smart education. With all the technology around, we are absolutely certain that students are only going to benefit from it. This growth spurt has left almost everything behind while taking STEM to new heights.
