The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has mandated the introduction of ‘Composite Skill Labs‘ in schools. As the educational landscape evolves, this initiative targets a gap where traditional learning often lacks practical application.

According to the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) 2015, only 2.7% of India’s workforce has received formal skill training. In contrast, the United States, Japan, and South Korea have significantly higher rates of 52%, 80%, and 96%, respectively. To limit this difference, CBSE compulsory included Composite Skill Labs. These tinkering labs will be an upgrade to the existing computer labs.

Understanding Composite Skill Labs

Composite Skill Labs are innovative educational spaces for students in classes 6 to 12. These labs align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE). They aim to blend theoretical knowledge with hands-on applications, preparing students for dynamic job markets.

Section 4.4 of NEP 2020 states that education will not only aim at cognitive development. Rather, it will build character and create holistic and well-rounded individuals equipped with essential 21st-century skills.

NCF-SE also advocates for making skill subjects a mandatory part of the curriculum starting in Class 6.

Students in these Composite Skill Labs develop essential 21st-century skills across various sectors by engaging in real-world tasks and projects. Such an environment prepares students for future challenges and fosters creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

This practical learning approach helps students adapt to real-world complexities. The setup encourages creative and critical thinking, setting a foundation for lifelong learning and adaptability.

Establishment of Composite Skill Labs

The establishment of Composite Skill Labs in all CBSE-affiliated schools is a directive from the 139th meeting of the Board’s Governing Body (ANNEXURE 5, Agenda XII). The lack of practical application leads to the setup of these well-equipped skill labs and vocational training centers within schools.

The introduction of Composite Skill Labs is expected to:

  • Mark a significant step towards integrating practical skills into the school curriculum
  • Align students with the industry needs and prepare students for various trades and vocations
  • Foster entrepreneurial skills and enable students to explore career options beyond traditional choices

Financial Implications:

  • CBSE will not bear any financial implications as schools establish these composite skill labs
  • Previously, CBSE established Skill Labs in government-run schools using World Bank project funds and resources. Schools might explore similar opportunities to set up more Skill Labs
  • Schools can independently seek funding through government schemes, CSR initiatives, and public-private partnerships

Guidelines for Setting Up Composite Skill Labs

CBSE schools must adhere to specific space and equipment guidelines to establish Composite Skill Labs. For classes 6-12, schools should set up one lab of 600 sq. ft. or two separate labs of 400 sq. ft. each for classes 6-10 and 11-12.

Regarding equipment, the labs must be furnished with all necessary machinery and tools to support a comprehensive skill-based curriculum.

Implementation Timeline:

  • New schools seeking CBSE affiliation must have a Composite Skill Lab ready as a prerequisite for affiliation
  • Schools already affiliated with CBSE have three years from the circular date (23.08.2024) to comply with these requirements

The curriculum guidelines on the CBSE website will soon provide further details on lab setup, including necessary materials for various skill subjects.

Suggested Skill Subjects by CBSE to Ignite Innovation and Entrepreneurship Among Students
