The Role and Purpose of NDU

National Digital University supports the government’s “Amrit Kaal” goal. It makes quality education flexible, accessible, and available to every student in India, anytime and anywhere. Students can design their curricula and earn credits from various institutions. 

This initiative bridges educational gaps, especially for those unable to attend traditional universities. NDU fosters international collaboration in higher education. Ultimately, NDU aspires to create a more inclusive and innovative educational landscape in India.

As part of this effort, the government plans to introduce a “One Class One TV Channel” program under the PM e-Vidya scheme. It will expand educational reach and address the “learning loss” caused by school closures. These initiatives aim to usher India into a modern era of education.

• Proposal for a Central Digital University: The government has proposed creating a fully digital university through a parliamentary act. NDU will offer diverse courses in various disciplines.
• Modified Regulations for Online Education: The University Grants Commission (UGC) plans to modify regulations, allowing universities to offer online courses without UGC-DEB permission. However, it permits if the university ranks within the top 100 NIRF and has an NAAC rating of 2.36 or higher.
• Collaboration with EdTech Platforms: The government encourages partnerships between universities, colleges, and EdTech platforms. It enables top institutions to offer online courses and broaden access to quality education.
• Establishment of Common Service Centers (CSCs): In partnership with MeitY, the UGC is setting up CSCs to provide high-quality internet access in remote areas.
• BharatNet Project: This initiative aims to enhance connectivity by extending optical fibers to Gram Panchayats.
• SWAYAM Prabha DTH Channels: These channels provide educational content in areas with low internet connectivity.
• All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Other Stakeholders’ Involvement: AICTE and other stakeholders are actively working to ensure a rapid start for this digital university.
