Traditional teaching has arguably taken a hit with online schooling becoming more prominent and some parents even resorted to homeschooling. But we think that learning is not restricted to a school. So, we curated some fun and easy Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) projects for students and beginners to create at home.
Most of these projects require you to have a PC or a laptop and an internet connection and are suitable for 9﹘15-year-olds. We believe that these projects provide a fun learning experience to induct your child to the world of artificial intelligence and machine learning early on. You can also read about its importance in today’s world here.
Let us begin.

Gesture-Controlled Space Battle Game
We bet you are still waiting for the new PlayStation 5 and its new Spider-Man game to release so you can play it. But until then, you can create your own game and play it with nothing but your hands!
The first in the list of AI and machine learning projects for students is this simple AI-based space battle game that lets you control your spaceship with just your hand gestures. You will need a PC/laptop with a camera or webcam, PictoBlox which can be downloaded here, and an internet connection.
The game has simple mechanics, you point your finger around to control the movement of the spaceship. The game uses AI to analyse your hand and its movements through the camera, which in turn drives the motion of the spaceship in the game.

Smart AI Chatbot
You must have used a chatbot at least once in your lifetime, a computer program designed to have conversations with users. Even if you haven’t, now’s the chance to change it! The second in the list of AI and machine learning projects for students enables you to make your own chatbot!
You talk to the chatbot and it responds accordingly through text. The chatbot uses PictoBlox’s Speech Recognition extension to recognize your speech and convert it into text and then answer your questions accordingly.
You will need a PC/laptop with a camera or webcam, PictoBlox, and an internet connection.
You can even dabble with things other than questions and answers – you can make it celebrate birthdays, crack jokes or even make it play a song.

Make Face Filters Using Face Detection
At an age of the internet frenzy with altering your face to look like your pet dog or wanting to look royal by wearing a crown, this project helps you do exactly just that – create your own face app filters and apply them to your face.
All you need is a laptop or a PC with a camera, PictoBlox, and an internet connection.
This is one fun AI and machine learning project for students which teaches them to use the computer camera to detect their face using AI, then correctly fit the filter to their face and then even make it tilt in accordance to how their face tilts.
Now, where did I leave my face?

Gesture Controlled Flappy Bird Game
Flappy Bird, the viral game of 2013 grew to fame because of its simple yet difficult gameplay. This fun AI project lets you create the same game but with a twist – instead of tapping on the screen to make the bird fly, you’ll be guiding the bird with the tip of your nose.
All you need is a laptop or a PC with a camera, PictoBlox, and an internet connection.
The game’s mechanics are simple – the bird follows the tip of your nose and you’ll have to move your head around to guide the bird. The game uses AI to analyse the position of your nose through the camera, which in turn drives the motion of the bird in the game.
Note: Your nose doesn’t necessarily have to be clean for this to work 🙂
-
Toy Recogniser
This is one interesting AI project. It explores the machine learning subset of AI by learning what is what from previously loaded samples. Here, you will train the computer to learn the names of your toys and then recognize them and say their names out loud when you bring it in front of the camera.
You will need a laptop or a PC with a camera, PictoBlox, and an internet connection.
With a little bit of tweaking, you can also alter the project for it to recognise other things like pets or even different members of your family!
-
Attendance System Using Face Detection
Due to the current global situation and online classes becoming the new normal, the traditional attendance system might be tricky or feel clunky. How about making the attendance system much simpler? This innovative machine learning project allows your teacher to take attendance of the class through face recognition. It uses machine learning to collect sample images of your face, and the next time the program scans a face, it uses AI to match it with the stored samples and mark you as “present” if there is a match.
You will need a laptop or a PC with a camera, PictoBlox, and an internet connection.
A fun and useful gift to your teacher, isn’t it?
-
Gesture Controlled Robot
If you have been making projects from STEMpedia, you would have made a 2-wheel drive robot. The next in the list of AI and machine learning projects for students will be controlling a 2-wheel drive robot using hand gestures rather than using a keyboard, smartphone or a joystick. If you haven’t made the robot or do not know how to make it, you can check this link out. You will need a 2-wheel drive robot, a laptop or a PC with a camera, PictoBlox, and an internet connection.
In this project, you will train the model using machine learning to understand hand gestures so it can move forward, turn left and right or also stop.
Time for you to show off your telekinetic powers 🙂
-
Draw in the Air Using Human Body Detection
Drawing on paper, drawing on a device, and now drawing in the air? Yes! This fun and interesting AI project allows you to draw in the air using your finger. The computer uses AI to calculate the position of your finger through the camera, and then “draw” along the motion of the path of your finger.
All you need is a laptop or a PC with a camera, PictoBlox, and an internet connection.
-
Logo Quiz Using Artificial Intelligence
You might be aware of loads and loads of popular brands for different things like clothes, cars and food. But how many of you can recognize the logos of their favourite brands? The last, but not the least AI and machine learning projects for students is this simple logo quiz with the help of Artificial Intelligence. You will need a laptop or a PC with a camera, PictoBlox’s Artificial Intelligence extension and an internet connection.
Let us know how many logos your friends could recognise from your quiz 🙂

Artificial Intelligence Based Home Automation
In this project, students can control home appliances using the speech recognition feature of PictoBlox’s Artificial Intelligence extension. The students will be creating a room with appliances like lights, a fan and a radio in PictoBlox, making the script in PictoBlox, and then control them using voice commands.
You will need a laptop or a PC with a camera, PictoBlox’s Artificial Intelligence extension and an internet connection.
You can also replicate this project to a real-life room with lights, fans and radios after finishing the project.
