The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has announced plans to include artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, machine learning (ML), and data science in the ICSE and ISC curriculum.  The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) will introduce two new subjects– artificial intelligence and robotics – in ICSE (Classes IX and X) and ISC (XI and XII) curriculum from the new academic year 2023.

CISCE has introduced Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (Subject Code 66) in ICSE (Classes IX and X) and ISC (XI and XII) curricula from the new academic year 2023. The students will appear for the exam with these newly introduced subjects in Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) in 2025 and in Indian School Certificates (ISC) in 2026.

The CISCE has the following objectives to introduce Artificial Intelligence and Robotics as a subject: 

  1. To develop an understanding of concepts and applications in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). 
  2. To develop competencies in Robotics and AI via classroom instruction, laboratory and self directed project-based learning approach. 
  3. To facilitate appreciation, understanding and application of concepts of Robotics and AI through learning and engaging in hands-on activities. 
  4. To instill AI-Readiness skills in students vide key concepts in AI, such as, Data, Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing. 
  5. To introduce the students to the concepts of AI Project Framework. 
  6. To familiarize students with computational skills (basic python coding language). 
  7. To create awareness about ethical considerations of AI.

Syllabus in robotics include design and manufacturing of robots, sensing, control, programming, and robot applications. Artificial intelligence courses include programming fundamentals, machine learning, big data analytics, deep learning, information technology, and communication systems.

The Syllabus of Robotics and AI (Subject Code 66) introduced by CISCE in  ICSE (Class IX) from the new academic year 2023 has been segmented into two broad categories.

Syllabus of Robotics includes Introduction to Robotics (Understanding Robotics, Evolution of Robots; Laws of Robotics, Classification of Robots), Robot as a System (Building blocks of Robots, Identification of Robots), Concepts in Robotics (Types of motion, Using links and joints to create specific motion, Degree of freedom of a robot)

Syllabus of Artificial Intelligence includes Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) (Meaning and brief history, Applications and Benefits of AI, Ethical considerations in AI), Role of Data and Information, Evolution of Computing (Data and Information, Evolution of Computing), Introduction to Data and Programming with Python (Familiarization with Python, Introduction to data types and variables,  Introduction to Operators, Conditional Statement, Control Statements, Functions), AI Concepts and AI Project Framework (AI Concepts, Components and Stages (alias AI Project Cycle))

Syllabus of Artificial Intelligence includes Decision making in Machines/ Computers (Automated versus Autonomous Systems, Decision Making, Machine Learning), Machine Intelligence and Cybersecurity in Computing (Machine Intelligence – Turing Test, Cybersecurity),  Components of AI Project Framework (Problem Scoping, Data Acquisition, Data Exploration, Modelling and Evaluation), Introduction to Data and Programming with Python ( Modules and Packages, Lists and Tuples in Python, Strings).

Students are expected to do a minimum of 20 assignments during the year to reinforce concepts studied in class. The details are as follows:
